Slightly decreasing European electricity production

When you add up the electricity production for several European countries, you can read some general trends.
The total electricity consumption for the 27 selected countries has decreased slightly (4%) in 6 years. The share of fossil production has decreased from 33% to 24%. Wind and solar energy have grown from 17% to 29%.
Nuclear power has decreased from 27% to 22%, but still makes up the largest contribution on the list. Most of the decrease is due to the shutdown of German nuclear power, which in 2019 delivered 71 TWh. In comparison, 155 TWh were produced from lignite and 100 TWh from coal in 2025 (27 countries).
Several European governments are reconsidering the future of nuclear power because it seems difficult to achieve climate goals without nuclear power. This applies, for example, to Sweden and Belgium.
Many countries are dependent on resources in other countries. If the total resources for balancing become too small, this will manifest itself in volatile market prices for electricity. The development of flexible demand has lagged far behind the growth in fluctuating production (wind and solar). Therefore, a certain share of controllable and climate-neutral production may be crucial, and nuclear power is an obvious option here.


This is another interpretation of the first chart. I have added linear trends for 7 years of electricity production in 20 European countries. I know that a linear projection is not a forecast, but the trends show which way things will go if we continue in the same direction as the last 7 years.
Many countries want increased electrification, but production has been steadily declining.
Many will welcome the decline in fossil fuel production. Production from nuclear power has also been declining. The declining production is not offset by the growth in production from wind and solar.
The trends so far will therefore not bring Europe the increased electricity production that should drive the green transition and make Europe competitive. Some countries have noticed the problem and have begun to consider which choices can drive development in the right direction.
At the same time, the balancing problem must be solved, which will increase with the growth in production from wind and solar. New nuclear power offers a solution to both problems. The conversion of electricity from wind and solar energy to hydrogen and liquid fuels are more uncertain visions that have not yet been able to demonstrate results on a large scale.
